The Winemakers

Two Paths, One Cellar

A chemist from Iowa and a winemaker from Argentina. Bound by a shared conviction: that great wine is made in the vineyard, finished with patience, and shared with the few who truly appreciate it.

Robert Rex, Founder & Winemaker

Robert Rex

Founder & Winemaker

A native of Iowa who found his calling in Berkeley, Robert discovered wine through a tasting club while studying Chemistry at UC Berkeley in 1961. By 1976, he was a partner in Berkeley's first commercial winery, where he trained under the legendary André Tchelistcheff — the father of modern California winemaking.

A true Renaissance man — chemist, graphic designer, woodworker, and accomplished gourmet cook — Robert brings a scientist's precision and an artist's intuition to every vintage. His five decades of winemaking experience culminate in Warm Springs Cellars, where small lots and single vineyards allow him to practice the kind of uncompromising craft that larger operations cannot sustain.

Cecilia Valdivia, Co-Founder & Winemaker

Cecilia Valdivia

Co-Founder & Winemaker

Born in Argentina and raised in the wine traditions of South America, Cecilia brings a worldview to Sonoma County winemaking that bridges continents. Her palate was shaped by the Malbecs of Mendoza before she crossed into California's coastal valleys, where she found the cool-climate elegance that matched her vision.

At Warm Springs Cellars, Cecilia is the hands in the vineyard and the instinct in the cellar. Her approach is tactile and intuitive — she walks the rows, tastes the fruit daily during harvest, and makes blending decisions that honor each vineyard's voice. Together with Robert, she has built a winery where science and sensibility meet in every bottle.

Meet Our Winemakers

“We don't make wine for everyone. We make it for the few who understand that the best things in life are worth waiting for.”

Our Philosophy

Small by Design,
Not by Accident

Since 1982, Warm Springs Cellars has chosen restraint over scale. Robert and Cecilia farm select vineyard blocks across Sonoma County, hand-picking fruit at dawn and crafting each wine with the patience it demands. One thousand cases is not a limitation. It is a commitment.

Single-Vineyard Focus

Each wine tells the story of one vineyard, one season. Wolf Run in Sonoma Valley for our Cabernet Sauvignon. ElieO in Russian River Valley for our Pinot Noir.

Clean Winemaking

Drawing from Robert's chemistry background and Cecilia's instinct for balance, we craft wines that are low in sulfites and histamines — pure expressions of fruit and terroir, nothing more.

Winemaker Direct

No middlemen, no retail shelves. Every bottle travels from our cellar to your table. Our members know the hands that made their wine.

Current Releases

The Wines

Two wines. Two vineyards. Each vintage a singular expression of place and season.

2019

Cabernet Sauvignon

Wolf Run Vineyard · Sonoma Valley

Dark cassis and dried violets open to a palate of black cherry, espresso, and graphite. Twenty-two months in French oak gave this wine its architecture; the volcanic soils of Wolf Run gave it its soul.

480 cases produced

2021

Pinot Noir

ElieO Vineyard · Russian River Valley

Ripe Bing cherry and wild strawberry meet hints of forest floor and baking spice. Whole-cluster fermentation adds a savory spine. Delicate yet persistent, this is Russian River at its most transparent.
